It's cold. I'm not moaning it's just a statement of fact. When it's cold you can't really weld - you can and people do, but certainly with structural welding it's not a good idea without lots of pre-warming and post-warming. Instead the winter months are spent on less appealing but equally necessary jobs like this.

This is one of the doors from the cab to the engine room - there will be four of these of which two will be dummies. Each one will be prepared in the same way, cleaning, removal of old paint and repainting. The glass gets a clean too as can be seen in the photos below.

A job which has been put off for months is this - the radiators. These were recovered from a Class 20 and are broadly the same as used on a Baby Deltic. There are two separate radiators housed in a common assembly, the oil side is outermost and the water side inner. One complete assembly is mounted on each side of the loco and both of the assemblies are shown below.

They come apart fairly easily and the top and bottom tanks can be unbolted on the water side to allow the removal of birds' nests and other detritus.

The water side is upright here and has been lifted up to leave the oil side on the floor.

From here the radiators will be thoroughly cleaned and degreased before pressure testing to check for leaks. Then there will be a flow test to determine the level of internal cleaning necessary. All the joints and the fasteners will be renewed regardless of condition.
