Our engine (power unit) stored inside the workshop at MAN in Colchester. Aug 2002. No work was carried out whilst it was stored there but it was an opportunity for the engine to dry out after years outside.
18 pistons from our engine lined up nicely after cleaning, inspectoin and testing. With new rings fitted and Hidural crowns polished ready for installation to the engine.
With all the work completed, the engine standds in the VDA van waiting for the temporary fuel, oil and coolant supplies to be added to allow it to be started for the first time since it was removed from a loco in the early 1970s.
The engine stands alone in the VDA van waiting for the generators to be installed.
Temporarily installed in a VDA van, our engine is seen just after it's first run.
Sparks fly from the underframe as the donor body is cut.
A clear parting of the donor loco body is visible here. The photo is looking across the body and the framework underneath supports both halves of the loco.
With all-new superstructure, body panelling and significant underframe work complete, D5910 is seen on the turntable at Barrow Hill.
The second of the nose ends has its panelwork painted in dark grey primer, the nose top still to go on.
A week later on from the previous photo, the nose tops are fitted to the no. 1 end.
As part of the preparations for clearing the roundhouse at Barrow Hill, the loco is covered up to prevent water ingress during its move outside for a week or so.
With both nose-end shortening work complete and the apertures for the nose-end connecting doors clearly visible, D5910 is seen at Barrow Hill.
