Something a bit different this week. We've weighed the loco. It's been done before but it's something we keep an eye on during the build. It is essential that each of the wheels exerts a force on the track which is within a known variance from the other wheels. Specific limits are set for differences across axles, between axles on the same bogie and between bogies. The 'resistance to derailment' (DQ/Q) of a rail vehicle relies on these forces and forms part of the calculations submitted as part of the design and build compliance.
The loco is still light, as you would expect with so much still to go in - there is presently no cable, no pipework, no air receivers, no cab fittings and no exhaust.
It'll be weighed again after the installation of all of the above and the final weighing will be undertaken in 'running order', with full fuel, oil and coolant tanks.
Bits of history keep revealing themselves, as has happened again this week. No doubting which loco and end this instrument panel cover came off.
These links are reclaimed from our spare bogies and will become the reversing links for the hand (parking) brake in a couple of weeks. The fit without modification under the cab steps and transfer the 'pull to apply' motion from one direction to another.
