This will be the final news update for this year - just a few photos of progress on the loco over recent weeks.
This is the state of progress inside no. 2 nose end. All unwanted equipment has been removed, the old paint has been scraped off and it's ready for repainting.
(Below) and this is no. 1 end further through the same process.
(Below) the cab underfloor of no. 1 end with the traction motor air ducting partially removed and the handbrake linkages off. The handbrake crank mountings are still to be removed but the handbrake screw has been taken out already.
(Below) and after all the remainder of the equipment has been removed. This leaves a clear space for the installation of a revised handbrake arrangement.
(Below) one of the more difficult parts of the conversion has been the deign of the revised handbrake. The donor loco used a standard lead-screw / trunnion arrangement to pull on the handbrake and linkages transferred the force to the centre brake cylinder on the bogie. With the change of bogie the handbrake direction of force needed to be reversed. We will achieve this by moving the handbrake linkages under the floor and by having a new (opposite hand) lead screw machined. The photo below shows the new position of the lever which reverses the direction of force and transfers the movement to the bogie from under the cab floor. This places the pivot lever in the middle of the cab footstep - a silly idea but one which is both unavoidable and true to the original loco.
