The Baby Deltic Project • 6 February 2020

News, 6 February 2020

It's been a couple of months since the last update and we have been busy.  Each photo below shows the progress made to date.  This one is the window modifications at no. 1 end - the same was done at the other end last year.  The bars are temporary and serve to maintain the shape of the new frames as they are welded in.
One of the more obvious visual differences between the donor loco and the recreated loco is the Secondman's side instrument panel.  The Baby Deltic had a triangular form of panel - as with Class 40's and 55's rather than the later style panel shown in the first photo.  If we are going to do this properly we have to take all reasonable steps in the conversion to ensure that the visual clues are as detailed as the noise.....

The sequence below shows the process of replacing the instrument panel and cleaning / painting the remaining bulkhead.  The old panel and its mounting were removed and all the old weld ground back; a cardboard template was cut to ensure that both ends of the loco were the same and that sufficient weld-gap could be made without having to grind away loads of 5mm plate; the replacement panel was tacked in and checked for alignment before being fully-welded; the whole area (including the other parts of the bulkhead which were de-scaled and cleaned) was painted in primer to protect the surface.
