Yet another week of cutting holes in new metal. This time it's for the bodyside engine room door. Using the same template as for the grilles, modified once again to suit the height and width of the door aperture (1200 x 500 if you're interested), the hole was clean cut using a borrowed plasma cutter in about ten minutes - including the time taken to tack the template to the bodyside. The template centre datum is not used for this cut, so it being out of alignment is unimportant.

Baby Deltics (like 40s) had a very visible frame reinforcement around the doors. They'd given up adding these by the time they got to building 37s for some reason. The photos below shows the 30 x 30 x 3 angle iron frame fully-welded into position and painted in primer. The second photo will hopefully answer the FAQ of "have you got an engine / where's the engine?"....

Somewhat out of sequence with the other photos, the door was test fitted prior to the installation of the reinforcement frame. It fitted, obviously.

Finally this week, six grabrails / handholds have been fabricated. These will go under the boiler water tank filler, three each side. Seen here before final assembly.
