The inside of the loco is filled with brackets, fixtures and other ephemera which is no longer required. Whilst a cutting torch can get close enough to removing the parts in their entirety the final dressing has to be completed with a grinder. Boring, hot, tiring and seemingly never-ending this work has continued this week. The image below shows the last pieces of the walkway support / conduit cover being ground away.
With the brackets fully removed, two coats of paint are added, the green is primer and the dark grey is undercoat. Note that the remaining floor plate is tack-welded to the longitudinal underframe members, this is a seam weld underneath the loco which creates a seal. The yellow line just visible on the longitude is the geometric centre-line of the loco, this is a critical reference for placing the power unit and other equipment in the recreated loco.
Also competed this week is the replacement of the floor plates in the no. 1 nose end. These three plates complete the joining of the (shortened) nose end to the loco. Not visible in the photo are the two sand box filler apertures which have been covered over and sealed.
