The focus on cab work continues this week. As with so much on the loco (any loco / vehicle actually), large amounts of stuff goes unseen. A prime example of this is the cab side windows - both droplights and quarterlights. The are supported and retained by a hard wood framework which is screwed and bolted to the cab superstructure. The original frames were in poor condition - not surprising because of their age and the exposure to water through leaking seals, etc. - and they have almost completely been replaced with new sections. Where the old sections were suitable for re-use they have been rubbed down to a bare surface, treated with fire-proofing and re-painted. The two photos below show a combination of new and old sections ready for painting. Once complete most of these will disappear behind internal cab metalwork so the attention to detail at this stage is critical.
Both ends of the loco are now identical once again with the installation of the nose ladder and the cutting out of the secondman's side headcode lamp apertures.
The final bits to go on this week were the two nose-mounted grab rails.
